Guest access
The whole house is yours - we host only one group per day. You have exclusive use of the entire building and grounds (garden, terrace, parking). There are no shared spaces with the owner or other guests, and this is not a partial rental. From the entrance to the bedrooms, kitchen and terrace, everything is your private space. The beach in front is a public beach: cross the road from the front door and walk down a few steps on the seawall, and you're on the sand. As the closest building to the beach, mornings and evenings feel almost like a private beach.
Other things to note
Please note
- This building is a partially renovated former guesthouse. The living/dining room and bedrooms are refreshed, but the entrance, hallway and wet areas (kitchen, sink, bath, toilets) keep their original structure with minimal updates, so some aging is visible. Recommended for guests who enjoy a retro atmosphere rather than brand-new facilities. - The kitchen and bathroom floors are 20-30 cm lower than the entrance - mind the step. - Both toilets are compact (0.7 m x 1.1 m); tall guests may find them snug. - This is a nature-rich island house: geckos and insects do appear despite regular pest control. If you are sensitive to them, please refrain from booking (insect spray provided). No refunds for this reason. - Non-smoking throughout. Smoke outdoors only, with your own portable ashtray. No littering of cigarette butts. - BBQ grill is a paid option (JPY 3,000, incl. 2 gas canisters). As advance preparation is needed, please contact us and complete payment at least 3 days before check-in. - Hand-rinse sand off swimwear at the outdoor shower before using the washers/dryers. - Dedicated garbage bins provided; see the house manual for sorting rules. - For our neighbors: BBQ, fireworks and terrace use are allowed until 21:00. After that, please keep voices and volume down both indoors and outdoors. - Fireworks: handheld sparklers only, in the garden or on the beach, until 21:00 (no skyrockets). Please extinguish used sparklers, never leave them behind, and clean up all firework waste. - The beach has no lifeguard. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.
Getting around
- Few shops on Ikema Island - a rental car is essential (do your shopping on the main island before crossing the bridge). - Free parking for 4-5 cars. - Buses and taxis are rarely available on the island.

Miyakojima
Start your morning at the beach right in front
- Step out the front door and the beach is right there. Cross the road, walk down a few steps of the seawall, and you are on the sand - Parasols, loungers, life jackets (adult and child sizes) and snorkel sets are all free. Just bring your swimsuit - This is a local beach, not a tourist beach, so mornings and evenings are almost empty - Handheld fireworks are welcome in the garden or on the beach (please prepare a bucket of water)
Every beach on the island is within a 5-minute drive
- Funakusu Beach: crystal-clear water, the best spot for snorkeling - Kaginmi Beach: you climb down a rope to reach the sand. An unusual entrance with a sense of adventure - Ikema Island is small enough to circle in about 30 minutes. Go find your favorite beach
Going to Yabiji (Yaebishi) coral reef
- Ikema Fishing Port, where the tour boats depart, is a 6-minute walk or 2-minute drive - Tours require advance booking. If you are not sure which operator to choose, feel free to ask us - On days when the sea is too rough to reach Yabiji, tours can often be switched to sea turtle snorkeling or trial diving
Do your shopping before entering the island
- There are small local shops (Oroku Shoten, Hamamoto Shoten) 1-2 minutes on foot, but their hours are short - Karimata Matchers (7:00-21:00) is a 9-minute drive, the nearest convenience store is 20 minutes, and large supermarkets are in the city center, 30 minutes away - The most reliable plan is to buy groceries and drinks on your way from Miyakojima city center
Eating on the island
- Doug's Burger Ikema: 6-minute walk. A burger born in Miyakojima - Kaimiru: right after crossing Ikema Bridge. Enjoy it together with the bridge view - gelato cafe Ninufa (4 min by car) / OHAMA Terrace (4 min by car) / Miyako Kibi Chaya (9 min by car) - Niima Soba (10 min by car) often sells out, so go early * Island shops close in the evening. At night, drive to the city center (30 min) or cook at your leisure in our kitchen
A little farther afield
- Ikema Bridge: one of Japan's most scenic drives. Just crossing it lifts the holiday mood - Ikema Wetland: a haven for wild birds. Bring binoculars (8 min by car) - Nishi-Hennazaki: famous for sunsets. Visit before sunset on a clear day (11 min by car)
In case of emergency
- Okinawa Prefectural Miyako Hospital (427-1 Shimozato, Hirara, Miyakojima) is about a 27-minute drive - Contacts for sudden illness at night or on holidays are listed in the guide we send after booking
Getting around
About 30 minutes by car from Miyako Airport. About 45 minutes by car from Shimojishima Airport. - Buses on Ikema Island are infrequent and taxis rarely pass by, so please come by rental car - The island is connected to Miyakojima by Ikema Bridge, a spectacular scenic drive. Enjoy the view on your way here - Free parking for 4-5 cars (2 compact cars or 1 large car in front, plus 3 standard cars at the back) - Please do your shopping on the way from the airport or Miyakojima city center - Full details are in the guide we send after booking
